Are You Afraid of the Dark? The Tale of Orpheo's Curse

Adventure 1994 Dos Dosbox Viacom New Media Mystery Horror Movie style

Spooky stuff

This is a rather entertaining little kids adventure that plays out a little like a sort of junior version of the classic puzzle mystery that is Myst. It's based on a Nickelodeon TV show from a while back and mixes some inventive storytelling with a scary atmosphere and some impressive visual effects. The story here is based around a group of kids called the Midnight Society. These brave souls like to entertain each other by telling scary stories around a campfire. You've got aspirations to join the hallowed ranks of this club but before you can do so, you must first tell the other members a suitably terrifying tale with which to impress them. What follows is a bizarre and genuinely quite spooky journey through a series of unusual locations which require a mix of puzzling and adventure-style skills. One of the big draws here is the use of real actors from the TV so if you've got fans in the house, they're sure to appreciate this aspect. The visuals also make use of a lot of full motion video and 3D animation, and it remains quite impressive technically. If you've got younger gamers who are feeling bold and in need of some scary gaming, then this fits the bill perfectly. It's pretty easy to pick up and explore, but challenging enough for older kids to enjoy as well, and while it's quite scary, it's not the sort of thing that's going to upset anyone but the most nervous of people. The visuals are well done, giving the game a great sense of atmosphere, while the story is fun to follow and the action never less than entertaining. All in all, a top notch experience for younger gamers.

The curse of a deranged magician

Are You Afraid of the Dark? The Tale of Orpheo's Curse is a horror adventure game brought to us by Viacom New Media. It takes place in a condemned theater named "Orpheo's Palace" which is said to be cursed. After confronting a deranged magician, you get separated by your sister and the game begins. The game is put in a first person perspective, just like in games like Myst. The gameplay is mostly based on solving puzzles and exploring. The puzzles are varied and not quite difficult to solve. The graphics are great and the sound department made a good job. The cutscenes are made with full-motion video and I've got to mention the acting: it's great and sometimes it makes you feel like you're watching the TV show instead.
