The rise of Handsome Jack. The Borderlands series is something of a polarizing one, thanks to its mix of stylized visuals and bizarrely over-the-top humor, but if you're attuned to its particular sensibilities, then this Pre-sequel is going to be right up your street. It keeps much of what made the previous games so popular and doesn't really change a lot but simply refines it to the point where this can be considered the height of the series. The story here relates how Handsome Jack, the main villain from Borderlands 2, rose to power, and which is told via a framing device of another key character being interrogated after the events of the second game. The gameplay is pretty much the same as the earlier installments, this being a first-person shooter with procedurally generated environments, heaps of over-the-top violence, loot, quests, mad weapons and characters. You've got four characters to choose from, each with unique qualities, while there are some new guns and gear to try out, and the whole thing can be played solo or with chums in co-op mode. For diehard fans of the series, this is a must play, as it polishes things till they shine. If you're not such a keen follower, this is unlikely to convert you and the story won't mean much either, so you might want to look elsewhere. However, there is no denying there is much entertainment to be had here, with stylish gunplay and a joyous romp of a plot to follow, although there are still the series' trademark annoyances to be found. Not a classic, but one for fans of the series.
