Hell's coming to town. Playing out in similar fashion to the likes of the classic Jagged Alliance series of tactical combat games, Helldorado certainly scores a few points for its Wild West theme. Fortunately, it's pretty solid in other areas too and makes for a reasonably entertaining time. It's a spin-off from the Desperados series and finds the player in control of John Cooper, a mercenary from the series, who must take on a number of missions in the badlands of the Old West. These include the likes of tracking down outlaws and bandits but fortunately Cooper has the assistance of his associates, a dodgy bunch which includes a Mexican bandit, a former slave, a saloon girl and the ubiquitous Doc. Each team member has their own unique skillset, with for example, Sam the former slave being an expert in demolitions. These skills come in handy during the various missions, which play out in complex fashion and which require a careful blend of stealth, violence and strategy. The whole thing plays out in turn-based fashion so if you are looking for a fast-paced action Western, you should look elsewhere. However, if you're more after something akin to a violent version of chess, then you're in for a good time here. There's certainly a high level of challenge and tactics required here so you're going to need your best thinking hat on if you want to win. The difficulty is perhaps a touch too high so even if you are a fan of this genre, you might want to think twice and this is a tough one indeed. It's a shame really as this might put a lot of people off what is actually a nice little game.
