Mega Man in all but name. The announcement of Mighty No. 9 caused a huge amount of interest from Mega Man fans clamoring for a new entry in their beloved series, coming as it does from the original designer and being hailed as a spiritual successor. However, now that the game's actually out, it's something of a disappointment and seeks to remind us that some things are best left in the past. The story takes place in a future where robots are commonplace but they suddenly go haywire, leaving only our two heroes in a fit state and who are charged by their creator to wake up the other Mighty Numbers and to find out what exactly is going on. The gameplay is very much the same as the original Mega Man games, as you control the main robot (the other one is available in co-op) as he explores a series of platform-style levels while engaging in a lot of run 'n' gun action. You can absorb powers from defeated enemies to power up your weapons, while there are the usual boss fights to contend with as you progress. This really is a tough game to talk about too much, and fans of Mega Man are going to be divided about how much of a successor this really is. The game certainly has some rough edges to it, showing a surprising lack of polish in places, but there's also a lot of fun to be had with the action and platforming. Level design is also a little wonky and the overly stylized visuals are not going to be to everyone's taste. The difficulty level is all over the place and there's just a general feeling that this wasn't planned through properly, making it ultimately a disappointment.
