Why is all the rum gone?. The Port Royale series shares much in common with the Patrician franchise and while both games offer lots of fun for trading fans, this installment is a bit lacking in many departments, making it a tough one to recommend. As usual, this one is a business simulator set in the 17th Century, with the player taking the role of a captain in the New World who must make his own way in the world while taking on the cutthroat mess of empires and factions, including Spain, England and pirate hordes. There are two main ways to play the game, one as an adventurer, which gives you a stronger focus on combat and conquering land, and the other as trader, which is more about establishing trade routes and developing cities. You can mix and match activities but there are two distinct single-player campaigns which allow you to focus on your preferred approach. For the first time in the series you've also got a multiplayer option which allows up to four players to duke it out for control of the seas. There is certainly much to enjoy in Port Royale 3, and it's easy to spend a fair time building up your empire while dishing out the pain to all those who stand in your way. The game also looks lovely, with some lush visuals that really bring the period to life. However, there is a lot of tedious grind to be done, particularly with the trading which can get dull. The ship-to-ship combat can be fun but is a bit hit and miss, which makes the whole experience somewhat less entertaining than it should have been.
