Fun and fantastic adventure. The original Book of Unwritten Tales is a superb piece of point-and-click adventuring that mixes elements of classics like Monkey Island and Fate of Atlantis and which doesn't take itself too seriously to create a fine example of the genre. This followup is equally entertaining but if you haven't played the original, head back there first so you can get the most enjoyment out of things. The complex storyline finds a magical plague spreading across the realm and a colorful set of characters must work together in order to save the world from certain disaster. An interesting aspect of the game here is that the various characters play out their own storylines separately before coming together as heroes to save the day. In terms of gameplay, this plays out in similar fashion to the aforementioned classics, with the player wandering around various fantasy environments, chatting with NPCs, collecting items and solving inventory-based puzzles. Another interesting aspect of the game is the witty writing that makes references to all sorts of pop-culture icons and much of the fun comes from spotting them all. Fortunately, there's more to things than just this though. The story is genuinely compelling and keeps you hooked to the end, with plenty of twists and turns, while the classic gameplay remains addictive, with a genuine sense of adventure. The puzzles too are generally successful, being varied, interesting and challenging in equal measure, and which help to make this a top-notch bit of entertainment.
