Happy clown. The Whispered World is a fine adventure game that boasts an unusual storyline, excellent visuals, and gripping puzzles, but this special edition is perhaps only really of interest to the diehard fans as it doesn't offer that much to make casual players sit up and take notice. The core game is still a great one, but those extras just don't cut the mustard. The game itself is a traditional point-and-click adventure, in the style of Simon the Sorcerer or Discworld, and finds you in the role of a rather unhappy clown. As Sadwick, you discover that you will be responsible for the end of the world but in an effort to stop this from happening, you must travel to the king's palace in the company of your caterpillar friend. What follows is classic adventure stuff, with a mixture of inventory- and dialogue-based puzzles, lots of characters to interact with, and some lovely environments to explore. You can power up your caterpillar friend to help out in certain situations while the whole thing is told with a light, gentle sense of humor, in a sort of fairytale way. For adventure fans, The Whispered World is an absolute treat. The narrative is a pleasant one, with lots of well-written dialogue and colorful characters to meet, and with some nice twists and turns. The puzzles are varied, clever and satisfying to solve, making the whole thing blend nicely together. The special edition offers a commentary from the makers, which is interesting if you want to know more about the development process, while the visuals have also been updated and there's an alternative ending. Overall, a great little game.
