Return to Tropico island. The latest in the long running and massively popular Tropico series of island strategy sims is a bit of a mixed bag. It remains as enjoyable as ever and brings a few new elements to the table but perhaps not enough to make it feel like a completely new experience, and which might put off long term fans of the franchise. This time around, you're placed in charge of the game's signature tropical island from the 19th Century to the 20th, starting out as governor of the colony and moving up the ranks as you go. You're responsible for pretty much everything that goes into the running of a tropical island, and you'll need manage resources and your citizens with equal aplomb if you want to succeed. As you progress, you'll experience dramatic events such as world wars, the Cold War, expanding and aggressive neighbours, and new technology to make your task simultaneously simpler and more complex. This version of the game also adds in new elements such as the family system, which allows you to use your extended family in positions of power, and the cooperative and competitive multiplayer. If you are completely new to the series, then there is a lot of fun to be had here. The game isn't as serious as it sounds, and has a good sense of humor, but doesn't lack in depth and complexity, making it a solid long term prospect. It's got plenty of options and a challenging campaign, while the multi-player modes are a welcome addition. It may not have strayed too far from the template laid down by earlier games, but if you can live with this, you're in for a good time.
